Renewed Appliances keeping consumer goods in circulation

The production of consumer goods like washing machines, fridges and dishwashers uses a lot of resources. These resources are often wasted if one part of the product breaks and the entire item needs to be replaced.

Renewed Appliances repair and refurbish appliances in Canberra to allow consumer goods to stay in operation, minimising the resource impacts of buying new products and supporting local jobs.

The challenge

“Manufacturing consumer goods uses resources and energy. Often, when one part of an appliance breaks down, the entire appliance is replaced. This behaviour creates waste as an entire appliance with one broken part is sent to landfill. Purchasing brand-new consumer goods requires additional resources to manufacture and transport,” said Hossein Asgari, owner and founder of Renewed Appliances.

“We are a family-owned business in Fyshwick. We have specialised in repair and refurbishment of consumer goods for more than 30 years.

The action

“At Renewed Appliances our team of technicians refurbish consumer goods and run tests for functionality and provide a deep clean of the item. We then resell refurbished items which are as good as new. We also offer trade-ins for customers wanting to upgrade their appliances and offer call-outs to repair broken goods.

“Every appliance we sell is restored to full functionality to ensure that it’s fit for years of perfect service. People come in all the time and say, “Are they really second-hand?"

The benefit

“Repairing consumer goods ensures that products can be used for many more years, extending their lifespan. It prevents valuable resources from going to landfill.

“Refurbishment services also creates jobs and training opportunities in Canberra. I believe that through simple repairs, items can be reused for years to come. Less waste means a better environment for everyone."

The Circular Economy

Renewed Appliances is an example of the circular economy in action. A circular economy ensures that materials and resources are captured and recirculated, adding value to products that were previously considered waste. This process generates economic opportunities, creating local jobs while designing out waste.
