Powering Canberra: Our pathway to electrification

04 Aug 2022

The ACT is leading the way on climate action in Australia. In 2020, we were the first state or territory to meet our electricity needs from 100% renewable energy sources – a significant step towards reaching our target of net zero emissions by 2045.

Now, we have set out a vision to bring us even closer to our net zero emissions target - Powering Canberra: Our Pathway to Electrification [PDF 17.5MB].

Gas is used in many Canberra households and businesses for heating, cooking and hot water. In fact, it is the source of 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in the ACT. Powering Canberra: Our Pathway to Electrification shows that to achieve net zero emissions, the best long-term option for the ACT is to steadily transition from gas to efficient electric technology.

The transition won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.

The Pathway considers how, over the next 20 years, Canberrans will be supported to gradually transition their homes and businesses off gas. There is no rush to replace your gas appliances now, but next time a gas appliance is due for a major service or needs replacement you should look to switch to an electric option.

There may be an upfront cost but choosing efficient electric appliances will save you money in the longer term and is the right thing to do for the environment.

If you are ready to start transitioning to all-electric now, there are resources and financial incentives available through ACT Government programs such as the Sustainable Household Scheme. Financial supports will continue to underpin the transition from gas, especially for vulnerable households, renters, people living in apartments and small businesses.

Find out more about the ACT’s journey towards electrification, why we’re doing it and how it will affect you.

The website includes an interactive resource that invites you to explore options to transition and shows what government supports are available.

We know that the transition will affect different parts of the community in different ways. As we progress towards the electrification of the ACT, we will consult with community groups representing our most vulnerable, large gas users, developers, builders and the broader community.

The ACT Government will soon begin consultation on the development of a regulation to limit new gas connections.

To register your interest in participating in forums or workshops on a regulation to prevent new gas connections, please contact gastransition@act.gov.au.
