About the strategy

The Strategy aims to support Canberrans purchasing a ZEV. It includes measure such as:

  • reducing the cost of purchasing and owning an EV
  • increasing the availability of EVs and EV chargers
  • making Canberra an attractive market for ZEV businesses and investment, including EV charging

ZEV priorities

The ACT Government is actively supporting the transition to ZEVs through multiple commitments and measures, including:

  • setting a nation-leading sales target that 80-90% of new vehicle sales are ZEVs by 2030
  • committing to explore the phase-out of new light internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035
  • committing to ensuring there are at least 180 public chargers in the ACT by 2025.

The ACT Government is also offering generous incentives for people and businesses thinking about buying a ZEVs, including:

These commitments place the ACT alongside other global jurisdictions who are taking strong action on climate change, including:

  • the European Union
  • Canada

Why it's important

Transport currently makes up over 60% of ACT emissions. Private vehicles account for about 70% of these transport emissions. To reduce emissions and act on climate change, it is important that all Canberrans have greater opportunity to choose sustainable transport options for every journey.

By 2030, the ACT will be a leading jurisdiction in the adoption of zero emissions vehicles. We will be on track to meet our target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

The electrification of our transport system is crucial to achieving our net-zero emissions future. We are committed to working with Federal Government and the Canberra community to find an appropriate pathway forward.

International collaboration

The ACT is a signatory to and member of:

  • The Birmingham Declaration and the e-mobility Declaration, which commit signatories to a zero emissions future for transport.
  • The global ZEV Challenge, which encourages automotive leaders to accelerate the transition towards a clean transport future.
  • The Climate Action Roundtable’s Memorandum of Understanding [530.1 KB] on electric vehicles, which commits signatories to collectively increase the uptake of electric vehicles.

Awards

The ACT has won:

  • the Cities Power Partnership Sustainable Transport Achievement Award in 2021 and 2017
  • the AfMA Fleet Environment Award 2021.

We were runner-up in the BANKSIA Clean Technology Award 2022.
