Guna’s hot water rebate

Monash resident Guna loves staying up late to watch the cricket and working in his garden.

Being comfortable at home is important to Guna. Recently, he received rebates for new solar panels and a hot water heat pump through the Home Energy Support Program.

By combining the rebate with a zero-interest loan, Guna was able to make his home more energy efficient with no upfront costs. Guna is already enjoying the benefits of energy efficient appliances and will save money on his energy bills for years to come.

The challenge

“I’ve been a Canberra resident since 1985 and I really enjoy life in Canberra.” Says Guna.

“My home was already mostly electric, but I wanted to replace the gas hot water system. It just wasn’t working well for us.”

“For example if somebody had a longer shower, you would have to wait another 20 minutes for the water to heat up.”

“Replacing my gas hot water system was also important to help Canberra achieve its zero-emissions targets.”

“Reducing emissions is everyone’s responsibility.”

The action

“I got a rebate through the Home Energy Support Program to replace my gas hot water with a hot water heat pump. I also received a rebate to install rooftop solar.”

“Applying for the rebate was very easy, and the ACT Government helped me a lot.”

“On top of the rebate, I was able to get a zero-interest loan through the Sustainable Household Scheme (SHS), which meant I didn’t have any upfront costs.”

“I was able to apply for the rebate and loan at the same time, and once they were approved the work was done quickly.”

The benefit

“For the first time in my life I have received credits on my electricity bills!”

“The new hot water system means we never run out of hot water when we need it. And the low electricity bills mean we can live in the house comfortably.”

“The benefit we get is much, much more than what we paid. That is the advice I give to my friends as well.”

“I would encourage anyone who is eligible to get involved in program.”
