Wood fuel

Remove and replace your wood heater for a more efficient electric option. You’ll reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. And you can get a financial incentive to do so. If you want to keep using your wood heater, use dry wood and don’t overfill with logs.

Remove and replace your wood heater

Wood smoke contains pollutants that harm the environment and your health.

The smoke and haze from wood heaters:

  • reduces visibility
  • causes breathing difficulties for some people
  • causes air pollution.

Burning wood also contributes to climate change. Burnt wood releases emissions of methane and nitrous oxide. We count sales of wood fuel as a human-induced emission source in the ACT Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

The Wood Heater Removal Program offers financial incentives to remove and dispose of domestic wood burning heaters or closing off your open fireplace permanently.

Rebates range from $500 to $1,250. Check the conditions and claim forms on the program page for more information.

The Home Energy Support Program provides rebates for eligible homeowners to help with the costs of installing energy-efficient products.
