Single-use plastics

Single-use plastics pollute our waterways and natural environment. And they don't break down in landfill. Some single-use plastics are now banned in the ACT. This is part of our commitment to sustainability.

The ban, part of the Plastic Reduction Act 2021 prohibits the supply of certain single-use plastic items. You cannot supply certain plastics and there are penalties if you do. The rules reduce our plastic waste and protect the environment.

Small steps for everyone

Avoid and refuse single-use items when possible. Bring your own bags, containers and reusable cutlery sets.

Make it part of your routine each time you go shopping, eat out or order takeaway food.

Small steps for businesses and community groups

Businesses, schools and community groups must now use either reusable or plastic-free alternatives. These include:

  • metal, bamboo and wooden cutlery and stirrers
  • paper, cardboard, compostable and aluminium containers
  • metal, ceramic, cardboard, bamboo, paper plates and bowls
  • metal, glass, silicone and paper straws
  • cotton buds with paper or bamboo stems.

Try to use reusable, washable plates, cups and cutlery.
