Solar
Solar energy systems and batteries are reducing emissions and helping Canberran’s save money on energy bills. Specialist advice is available to help businesses.
Solar energy systems
Systems that use the sun to generate power help reduce our dependence on burning fossil fuels.
By installing a solar energy system at home or in your business, community group or school, you’re helping the environment. When you use your solar electricity during the day, you reduce the amount of electricity you may need to buy from the grid. Your daytime use could be free if your solar system is making enough electricity.
Many Canberra households have adopted rooftop solar systems, using solar helps support the ACT’s electricity supply to be 100% renewable.
Use our Solar Calculator to determine if a solar system is right for your home. It can help you estimate annual power bill savings and payback period. If you’re eligible for a rebate, this can also be factored into your savings.
Once you have installed solar, use Energy Made Easy to find a retailer and compare pricing.
Solar energy systems include:
- solar for hot water
- solar photovoltaic (PV) panels
- solar storage batteries.
Swapping out your gas appliances and electrifying your home will help you get the most out of your solar system. The ACT Government has partnered with CHOICE, Australia’s leading consumer advocacy group, to create an online tool specifically to help Canberrans transition to all-electric homes.
This tool assists Canberrans in planning their switch to an all-electric home by:
- Identifying which appliances need replacement and when.
- Providing free access to CHOICE data on recommended electric appliances.
- Offering cost estimates for upgrades and annual energy savings.
You can also find out what ACT Government supports are available to help you make the switch.

Did you know?
If you also switch your gas appliances to electric systems when you can, you'll be reducing ACT emissions and saving money.
Solar storage batteries
You can continue to enjoy the benefits of your solar energy through the evening by installing a solar storage battery. These batteries will help capture any excess solar generated during the day for later use.
