Walking and cycling

Even though Canberra is spread out, we have thousands of kilometres of off-road paths for everyone to share. Take your next trip as a walk or a ride to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s good for your health too.

Walking and cycling

About half the trips we make around the ACT are less than 5km. That’s an easy cycle or walk for many.

Reduce your carbon footprint by using your own body to get from A to B. By avoiding the car, you can also help with traffic congestion, save money on parking and petrol, and improve your health. You might even get there quicker!

The ACT has hundreds of kilometres of shared off-road paths perfect for walking, cycling, or combining with public transport.

Use these walking and cycling maps or the Transport Canberra journey planner to find the best route.

Follow the ACT's rules for how bikes, pedestrians and cars share roads and paths. There are also rules for electric bikes and scooters.

If you notice a damaged pathway while out and about, you can report it.

Did you know?

You can use Airbike bike share, which operates in and around the Australian National University, city centre, and the Parliamentary zone.

Ways to travel

You can park your car for free and ride your bike the rest of the way at a Park and Pedal location.

Park your bike in a secure cage, or use the bike racks, near a public transport stop at a Bike and Ride location [PDF 716KB].

You can also put your bike on a bus (using the bike rack at the front – watch the video as a guide) and on board a light rail vehicle.

Walk or ride to school

Avoid the busy school drop-off and pick-up zone. Encourage children to safely walk, cycle or scoot to school. It’s great for their health too.

Schools and students can find travel information online.
