Canberra's Electric Bike Library

Began 24 July 2020. Due to end 30 June 2024.

Electric bikes are a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. They're easier to ride than a traditional bike but still get you fit. An e-bike can replace your car for short trips. Try before you buy at the Canberra Electric Bike Library. Find an e-bike that's right for you.

About the program

The Canberra Electric Bike Library lets you borrow e-bikes to try.

The ACT Government has contracted SEE-Change and Switched on Cycles to run the program.

There are many styles of bikes you can borrow and try:

  • a standard e-bike
  • a bike for carrying loads
  • an electric cargo bike to use as a second car alternative
  • a family bike for transporting children.

Bikes can come fitted with accessories, such as child seats, panniers, lights and locks so you’re all set to carry what you need.

How it works

Visit the SEE-Change website to complete a loan request form.

You'll need to tell them:

  • your personal details (name, age, gender)
  • any personal considerations (e.g. very tall, injury or disability, need to carry heavy loads)
  • details of any other riders and passengers
  • intended use of the bike.

Someone from SEE-Change will email you. They'll help you choose a suitable bike and book in a time for you to collect it.

The current loan period is 14 days.

Come and try sessions are advertised on the SEE-Change events page.

Who can take part

ACT residents can apply to borrow an electric bike for a short period. You can borrow an e-bike before buying, to see if it's right for you. Conditions may apply.

Cost

Bike hire is free, but you'll need to pay a small fee for insurance.

You'll need to get a temporary membership with Pedal Power ACT so you're covered by insurance during the loan period. If you already hold insurance with Pedal Power ACT, then you're already covered.

Eric Larssen

If you intend to use the bike for work, you'll need your own public liability and workers' compensation insurance.

Why it's so important

The ACT is committed to net zero emissions by 2045. You can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using environmentally friendly transport methods. These include electric vehicles, e-bikes, e-scooters and public transport.

Riding an e-bike can reduce your carbon footprint. You can also save money, have fun, and improve your fitness and wellbeing.
