Public transport

Canberra's bus and light rail network can take you anywhere in the city. Public transport fares can cost less than parking and petrol. Combine walking and cycling with public transport for an easy commute. Public transport reduces traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.

The benefits

The cost of living is going up and climate change is affecting our planet. Now is the time to change your commute.

By using public transport in the ACT, you will:

  • reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions
  • reduce traffic congestion
  • save on parking
  • save on private vehicle costs including petrol and wear and tear
  • build good habits for your physical and mental health.

There are also discounts for students and seniors.

You don’t need a bus or light rail stop right outside your house to make the switch. There are so many convenient and flexible ways to use public transport, especially when you combine with:

It’s easier than you think. Plan your bus and light rail journey and find out about tickets and MyWay. You can also find school timetables and maps.

Park and Ride

There are many Park and Ride locations in the ACT. This means you can park your car in an allocated space and finish your journey on a bus or light rail. You’ll be travelling a shorter distance in your car and reducing congestion in major business areas.

Why using public transport is important

The ACT's transport sector is responsible for 60% of the territory’s emissions. By reducing the number of cars on the road, and converting our bus network to zero emissions, we are helping the environment.

We’re working towards a complete zero-emissions fleet by 2040. We’ve already started with the purchase of 12 electric buses. Find out more in the Zero-Emission Transition Plan for Transport Canberra.

Already, the introduction of light rail to the ACT has seen 20% of public transport trips powered by 100% renewable electricity. And we’re sourcing more battery electric buses for our fleet.
