Transitioning away from the use of fossil fuel energy won’t happen overnight. We will continue to engage directly with stakeholders and the community to ensure a fair and equitable transition. This allows us an opportunity to better understand the challenges and opportunities the transition away from gas presents for ACT homes, businesses, industry, and community groups.

Developing regulations for gas appliances
The ACT Government is currently inviting stakeholder feedback and ideas on the regulatory approach to support the transition away from gas appliance use. Any regulations will seek to support an efficient, equitable and cost-effective pathway from fossil fuel gas.
We are seeking preferences, ideas and concerns on:
- what regulatory options we should explore
- what type of appliances should be considered
- timeframes for implementation
- implementation approach, including potential exemptions.
To help guide the conversation, the ACT Government has released the Future Appliance Regulations to Support the Gas Transition Discussion Paper. You can also read the Summary document to find out more.
Early feedback will support the development of a draft regulation and Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA). Any draft regulation and RIA will be released for broader community consultation.
This is a key commitment included in the Integrated Energy Plan – Canberra’s guiding energy transition policy.

Stakeholder consultation is open from Wednesday 5 August to Wednesday 16 September 2026.
Listening to our community
The development of the plan to electrify Canberra has been informed by consultation with the community, industry and subject matter experts via two position papers: Powering Canberra: Our Pathway to Electrification and Canberra is electrifying: Towards a net zero emissions city.
Consultation reports and listening reports outlining what was heard in relation to the launch of the first Integrated Energy Plan and the Regulation to prevent new gas connections are available on YourSay Conversations.
