Eugen is saving money with solar

Over the years, Latham resident, Eugen, has made the most of ACT Government support to improve the energy efficiency of his home.

Recently, he received a rebate for new solar panels through the Home Energy Support Program.

He’s saved money on the upfront costs of efficient electric appliances for his home and will benefit from reduced running costs going forward.

The challenge

“I’ve been living in the family home since we first bought it in 1988. As the house has aged, so too have some of the essential appliances,” said ex-serviceman Eugen.

“When my hot-water system needed replacing, my electricity retailer gave me a discount to upgrade to an efficient electric system. I was also eligible for a discount when I upgraded my gas heater with an efficient electric reverse cycle air conditioner.

“I’ve been interested in the financial advantages of getting solar panels for a while, but when I first started looking, the quotes for buying panels were way too high.

“One day, I was at Access Canberra and asked about rebates for solar panels. They suggested I might be eligible for the Home Energy Support Program.

The action

“I looked up the Everyday Climate Choices website and then called the Sustainable Home Advice phone line. The team were really helpful and gave me all the information I needed to submit an application for a rebate. From there it was all done by email.

“I sought a quote for solar panels, which I provided to the team as part of my rebate application. When reviewing the quote, the team gave me valuable advice to ensure I got a good system.

“The solar panels, including installation, cost around $5,300. I got a rebate of $2,500 through the Home Energy Support Program, so the out-of-pocket expense for me was about $2,800.

The benefit

“Getting the solar panels was a smart move. I had money in the bank that wasn’t gaining any interest, so by investing in energy efficiency I’m now getting some return on my capital.

“It’s not that much extra work to get the rebate and I was able to get help along the way. Every penny counts so I think it’s worthwhile. And I can also help the environment at the same time.

With the Home Energy Support Program solar rebate, Eugen is expected to pay the system off in under three years, saving approximately $1,500 per year.
