What funding was available

A total of $150,000 (excl GST) was available in grant funding across two options:

Category A: Grants of up to a maximum of $50,000 to purchase a zero emissions vehicle for rent to ACT residents and businesses.

Category B: Grants of up to $20,000 with a total of $100,000 available to purchase or lease a light commercial electric utility vehicle.

Why it’s important

Now that we have achieved 100% renewable electricity, transport is the single largest contributor to the ACT’s greenhouse gas emissions, making up over 60% of the total.

To reach our goal of net zero emissions by 2045, we need to significantly reduce emissions from transport. The grants program supports community uptake of zero emissions vehicles, such as electric and hydrogen vehicles in the ACT.

ZEVs are currently more expensive than other petrol and diesel vehicle options available on the market. This is anticipated to change and change fast. The ACT Government has set an ambitious sales target of 80-90% of new vehicles being ZEVs by 2030. Australia is also anticipating more and cheaper EV models to come onto the new and second-hand market in the next few years.

In the meantime, incentives such as grants, zero interest loans and other financial support are important to help get ZEVs and other ZEV infrastructure (e.g. chargers) into the ACT.
