Sustainable Apartments Pilot

A government-funded initiative providing tailored advice for the electrification of seven apartment complexes.

Applications for the Pilot closed on 14 March 2025.

About the pilot

The Sustainable Apartments Pilot (the Pilot) will provide detailed feasibility studies for the electrification of 7 apartment complexes.

Participation in the Pilot is at no cost to the owners corporation. The Pilot is funded by the ACT Government, the Australian Government and other Australian jurisdictional government contributions.

After the pilot, participating owners corporations will receive a feasibility study which will provide a clear roadmap for electrification and can choose to implement the recommendations.

The findings of the studies will be summarised and shared with the owners corporation community in the ACT and other jurisdictions in Australia to support electrification of complex buildings.

Support for apartment complexes

An owners corporation can access funds to support a solar installation that benefits all residents through the Solar for Apartments Program.

FAQs

About the pilot

The electrification of apartment complexes is a key step toward reducing Canberra’s carbon emissions and achieving a more sustainable future. The electrification of multi-storey buildings is a complex challenge, and the objective of this pilot is to understand this challenge and provide guidance to the owners corporation community on their pathway.

The Pilot is focused on complete electrification of apartment complexes - i.e. replacing all systems powered by fossil fuels, (such as gas heating or hot water), with suitable electric solutions.

No, the service provided through this pilot is completely free for the selected apartment complexes.

This initiative is funded by the ACT Government, the Australian Government and other Australian jurisdictional government contributions.

The government will evaluate the outcomes of this pilot to assess its feasibility for broader implementation across apartment complexes in Canberra.

Participating in the Pilot

The specific reports and outcomes for each participating complex will be provided to each of the seven apartment complexes. The summarised learnings and electrification pathways from the studies will be provided to the broader owners corporation community in the ACT and other jurisdictions in Australia. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions [PDF 229.9 KB] for more detail.
