Sustainable Apartments Pilot
A government-funded initiative that provided tailored electrification pathways for seven participating apartment complexes in Canberra.
The Pilot commenced March 2025 and was completed in December 2025.
About the pilot
The Sustainable Apartments Pilot (the Pilot) provided site-specific feasibility studies for the electrification of 7 apartment complexes.
The Pilot was funded by the ACT Government, the Australian Government and other Australian jurisdictional government contributions.
On completion of the Pilot, participating owners corporations received a feasibility study report which provided a roadmap for electrification and an implementation plan to support their transition when ready.
Findings of the Pilot

Why it’s important
The ACT is trying to lower greenhouse gas emissions to fight climate change.
Our goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2045. To achieve this, we are preparing to electrify our city and transition away from the use of fossil fuel gas.
The electrification of apartment complexes is a key step toward reducing Canberra’s carbon emissions and achieving a more sustainable future. The electrification of multi-storey buildings is a complex challenge, the objective of the Pilot was to understand this challenge and provide guidance to the owners corporation community on their pathway.
The Pilot was successful in achieving this and options for future support are being explored to help guide Canberra’s owners corporation community in the future.
What’s next for apartment complexes

There is currently an initiative for owners corporations to access funding to support a solar installation that benefits all residents through the Solar for Apartments Program.
