Home Energy Action Kit

Be proactive about climate change. Borrow the DIY Home Energy Action Kit from your local library. Use it to assess your energy and water usage. Once you know what you use, start making simple changes. You’ll save money while making your home more comfortable and efficient.

About the program

The Home Energy Action Kit is a great place to start when assessing your energy and water usage. Do it yourself to save time and money. It’s easy to use – you can even get the kids involved.

The kit has instructions and equipment so you can easily see where energy is being used in your home. You can also measure tap flow rates and hot water temperatures. It provides a basic energy audit of your home.

The kit has a guide to help you plan your improvements.

Borrow your kit from an ACT Public Library or through the online library catalogue.

How it works

The kit has everything you need to audit your home’s energy and water use:

  • A handheld power meter to measure energy usage and running costs of your appliances
  • An infrared thermometer to measure fridge, freezer and hot water temperatures
  • A compass to look at the orientation of your home and passive solar heating ideas
  • A stopwatch to measure shower and tap flow rates
  • Instructions for using the equipment
  • A workbook to calculate your home energy efficiency.

After doing an audit of your home, the kit helps you make a plan of action.

Who can take part

Anyone can borrow the kit from an ACT Public Library. You’ll need a library membership. Joining the library is quick, easy and free.

Cost

The kit is free to borrow.

Why it’s important

There are simple changes we can all make in our homes to save energy, water and money.

By knowing what areas of your home can be improved, you can contribute to climate action and make your home more comfortable. Fix a few items to make a difference to your energy efficiency and the ACT's greenhouse gas emissions.
