Ride or Walk to School Program

The Ride or Walk to School Program prepares kids to ride or walk to school. It's good for them — and for the environment. The program gives teachers and families resources and training. This includes route maps to schools. Schools can also hire bikes through the program.

About the program

The School Safety Program within the Transport Canberra and City Directorate delivers the free Ride or Walk to School Program. The program helps school communities make riding and walking to school a habit. By getting involved, primary school children can develop skills, confidence and healthy habits.

Get support, resources and training for your school community.

How it works

To see if your school is part of the program, check the Ride or Walk to School route.

Can't see your school on the list? Get approval from your principal and nominate a teacher coordinator. Then book a 10-minute information session with the School Safety Program.

Your school must also fill out an active travel plan.

You'll get access to a range of resources, including:

  • digital walking and riding maps with safe routes and part-way drop-off points
  • free, accredited teacher training and lesson plans
  • risk assessment and permission slip templates
  • loan bikes, scooters and helmets to run the program
  • marketing materials to promote active travel at your school
  • support from a dedicated program manager.

Download curriculum guides and resources for families.

Why it's important

The ACT is committed to net zero emissions by 2045.

Encouraging children to ride or walk to school creates a habit that's good for them. And good for the environment.

Riding and walking to school:

  • minimises traffic around schools
  • reduces noise and air pollution
  • lowers emissions.

It helps children:

  • learn healthy exercise habits
  • build self-confidence and independence
  • improve their focus.
