About the Awards

Schools play an important role in teaching sustainability practices and concepts. The knowledge and skills that are developed in schools can be spread by students, teachers and staff throughout the broader community.

The Climate Choices Schools Awards is an annual event that recognises the people, projects and schools that champion climate action and sustainability in their school community.

The Awards celebrate excellence in sustainable management of resources across the Sustainable Schools Program focus areas – energy, water, biodiversity, waste, transport and curriculum integration.

There are five award categories, with 10 awards to be won.

  • Schools do not nominate for this Award. The Sustainable Schools Program team together with the judges make this selection. The award recognises a school that has significantly increased their focus on climate action and sustainability during the year and made improvements to their sustainability practices, progressing in ‘leaps and bounds’.

This category acknowledges a school that has achieved sustainability outcomes through school-wide behavioural change. The School of the Year will have demonstrated their commitment to climate action through active leadership across the school and holistically across the Sustainable Schools Program focus areas. They have identified areas of improvement to inform and implement effective changes. The school community embraces climate action and shows their commitment as a school and within the classroom.
