Climate action highlights for 2022-23

30 Nov 2023

The ACT's actions to address climate change in 2022-23 are in focus this week with the release of the Minister for Water, Energy, and Emissions Reduction Annual Report.

Reducing emissions, building resilience to climate change, and making sustainable choices are crucial. The ACT is committed to net zero emissions by 2045.This report helps us see the steps we're taking towards this goal.

We’re already a world leader in climate action. This year’s report demonstrates that the ACT continues to have ambitious climate goals and takes action to achieve them. It allows us to reflect on the local actions we're taking to combat climate change.

In 2022-23, Canberra:

  • was powered by 100% renewable electricity for the fourth year in a row
  • achieved a 47% reduction from 1990 levels of emissions
  • announced an electrification pathway to transition off fossil-fuel gas by 2045
  • announced the Make Your Next Choice Electric online tool, an Australia-first partnership with CHOICE to help Canberran’s create tailored electrification plans and switch off gas
  • introduced new minimum ceiling insulation standards in residential rental properties
  • continued to support vulnerable households suffering financial stress due to energy bills and help improve the thermal comfort of their homes
  • helped households, businesses and schools reduce their emissions through government programs
  • funded community projects to support our transition to net zero emissions.

We should all be proud of these achievements. But there is more to be done. Our biggest current challenges are to reduce our emissions from transport and gas, which account for the majority of our city’s emissions.

We have significant plans in place to help the ACT become a net zero emissions city by 2045.These include:

We have also released the Integrated Energy Plan Position Paper which will guide our transition from harmful fossil fuel gas to renewable energy.

Everyone has a role to play to tackle climate change and reduce emissions in the ACT. There are many great tools, resources and advice on this website to help you on your journey. Whatever the action, every little bit helps!
