New community consultation reports show that Canberrans are generally supportive of the ACT’s energy transition

19 Mar 2024

In September and August 2023, the ACT Government asked the community how we should transition away from fossil fuel energy. The ACT has a legislated goal to reach net zero emissions by 2045, and we need a plan to help us get there that benefits our community.

A Community Consultation Report is now available on YourSay Conversations outlining what was heard as part of the community consultation on the development of an Integrated Energy Plan. A Community Survey Report and a series of activity reports are also now available, providing detailed information on the activities undertaken throughout the consultation period and key ideas, feedback and concerns that were identified by participants.

What we heard was that there was mixed support for the ACT’s plan to transition our energy system away from fossil fuel energy. The majority of submissions from organisations were generally supportive with many acknowledging the social, environmental and economic benefits of transition to renewable electricity for our community. The majority of community responses were also supportive (almost 60%). However 28% were very unsupportive and almost 9% somewhat unsupportive.

Community feedback is essential to helping government design a plan that will help us achieve net zero emissions and create an affordable and reliable energy system that meets the needs of our community.

The ACT Government’s first Integrated Energy Plan is expected to be released in the first half of 2024.
