ACT recognised as climate action leader in national sustainability awards

15 Mar 2022

The ACT Government is excited to announce that we have been shortlisted as a finalist for the 33rd Banksia National Sustainability Awards – Australia’s longest running sustainability awards.

Both the ACT Zero Emissions Vehicles Program and the Sustainable Household Scheme programs have been recognised by the Awards, acknowledging the ACT’s position as a national leader on climate action.

The Banksia Sustainability Awards shine a spotlight on individuals, communities, businesses and governments for their innovation, achievement and commitment to creating more sustainable communities.

The ACT’s Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Program is a finalist for the Clean Technology Award. Electrifying transport in the Territory is key to achieving our net zero emissions target by 2045, and we have implemented a range of programs and policy tools to achieve this goal. Some of these include generous financial incentives for Canberrans looking to purchase a zero emissions vehicle, a commitment to transitioning the Government’s passenger fleet to 100% zero-emissions vehicles, and working with industry and other governments to expand the public charging network.

ACT Government's Sustainable Household Scheme is also a finalist for the Future Cities award. The Scheme offers zero-interest loans of up to $15,000 for eligible households to invest in energy efficiency upgrades including solar PV, household battery, electric stovetops, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. The Scheme is a key component of the Government’s strategy to tackle climate change while supporting households to reduce their power bills and growing jobs, innovation and competition in the renewable energy industry.

The winners of the Banksia National Sustainability Awards will be announced at a gala event at the Melbourne Convention and Entertainment Centre on 31 March.
