Choosing an electric vehicle made easy

11 Jul 2023

More and more Canberrans are deciding that electric vehicles (EVs) are the right choice for them. Now, there’s an online tool that can help you weigh up the options for your household.

With their low running and maintenance costs, it’s no surprise that there are now over 5,000 Zero Emissions Vehicles (ZEVs) registered in the ACT. The majority of these ZEVs are EVs. The number ZEVs has doubled since this time last year and now one in five newly registered vehicles is a ZEV.

Did you know?

A Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) is a battery electric vehicle (EV) or a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). A ZEV isn’t necessarily a passenger car – it could also be a motorcycle or a goods vehicle.

Transport accounts for about 60% of total carbon emissions in the ACT. More ZEVs will play an important role in meeting our emissions reduction targets.

To help Canberrans consider which ZEV would best suit their needs, the ACT Government has launched a new online tool. The tool compares the total cost of ownership of different models of electric versus petrol or diesel vehicles.

While the upfront cost of an EV may be higher, the total cost of ownership over a 5-year period may be more, or as equally, affordable than a similar petrol or diesel vehicle.

The total cost of ownership calculation takes into account the purchase, maintenance, resale value, running and sales costs.

Features of the tool include:

  • You can input vehicle features including make/model, body type (e.g. hatchback, sedan etc), and fuel type (e.g. petrol, diesel, battery electric etc). You can also input information about usage such as average KMs travelled per year, annual fuel costs etc.
  • You can use the tool to input the features for vehicles arriving on the market soon and find out the total cost of ownership.
  • The tool integrates taxes and incentives unique to the ACT such as registration waivers and stamp duty exemptions on electric vehicles.
  • The tool does not currently consider the ACT’s future emissions-based registration costs; however, when it comes into operation, it will be included.

New electric vehicle models can go much further than people think on one charge. The average zero emissions vehicle driving range spans between 300 – 600km with performance continuingly improving. On average Canberrans drive around 40kms per day.

To support a growing industry, Canberra households and businesses can access a range of financial incentives that are not available for petrol and diesel alternatives.

When purchasing your next car, consider making your next choice electric.
