Climate action highlights for 2023-24
03 Dec 2024
The ACT's actions to address climate change in 2023-24 are in focus this week with the release of the Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water’s Annual Report.
Reducing emissions, building resilience to climate change, and making sustainable choices are crucial in reaching our goal of net zero emissions by 2045. This report helps us see the steps that ACT Government and community have taken over the past year towards this goal.
The ACT is nationally recognised for its leadership in action on climate change.
In 2023-24, Canberra:
- was powered by 100% renewable electricity for the fifth year in a row.
- Achieved a 50% reduction from 1990 levels of emissions.
- Commenced regulation to prevent new fossil fuel gas network connections in all residential, commercial and community facility land-use zones.
- Released the Integrated Energy Plan 2024-30, an electrification pathway to transition off fossil fuel gas by 2045
- Supported 6,269 Canberra households to install energy efficient home upgrades.
- Led the nation in electric vehicle (EV) uptake, with nearly one in 5 of all newly registered vehicles EVs.
These achievements highlight the collective efforts of government, community and industry but we know there is still work to be done.
We have significant plans in place to help the ACT become a net zero emissions city by 2045. These include:
- the newly released Integrated Energy Plan
- the ACT Circular Economy and Action Plan
- the Active Travel Plan
- the ACT Climate Strategy 2019-25 [PDF 11.4 MB]
