Comfortable, energy-efficient homes for low-income Canberrans

12 May 2023

The Home Energy Support Program has expanded to include ceiling insulation rebates for low-income homeowners.

The ACT Government introduced the Home Energy Support Program in March 2022. So far, it has provided rebates to over 370 low-income households. Rebates have helped with the installation of solar panels and efficient electric appliances.

Now, eligible households can access rebates for ceiling insulation.

Heating and cooling make up 60% of an average Canberra household's energy use. Installing ceiling insulation is one of the most cost-effective and energy-efficient home improvements. It helps keep homes a comfortable temperature year-round. This can save households a lot of money and improve wellbeing.

All Canberra households will need to replace gas appliances with electric by 2045.

This transition will be more difficult for some, especially those on a low income. Often, people who are least able to afford to pay for energy live in homes that are the most expensive to heat and cool. This can impact their health, comfort, and happiness at home.

All Canberrans should be able to benefit from the ACT’s transition from gas to electric. Providing extra support to those who need it most will ensure a just transition.
