Electric buses part of Canberra’s zero-emissions future

24 Feb 2022

If you're a public transport user, your personal transport footprint is about to get a whole lot smaller.

12 new electric buses are set to hit Canberra streets later this year and there are a further 90 on the way.

The new buses will all be accessible for wheelchairs and prams, as well as having bike racks on the front, making climate-wise transport choices easier for everyone.

The current preferred suppliers to lease the first twelve electric buses to the ACT are VDI Australia and Custom Bus Group. This includes two different technology types by two different manufacturers so that we can understand exactly how different vehicles perform in the local Canberra environment.

These buses will operate from the Tuggeranong and Belconnen bus depots and will be part of the Transport Canberra fleet by the end of 2022. Procurement for the additional 90 buses is now underway.

With around 60% of the ACT’s emissions coming from transport, Canberrans can take small steps and make a big difference for our environment by taking the bus.

So think about public transport next time you are planning your journey, and when you take a trip on an electric bus you will enjoy a smoother, quieter and more environmentally friendly ride.
