Grants helping community gardens grow

16 May 2022

Applications for the 2022 Community Garden Grants round are now open.

The Grants program has supported the creation and enhancement of over 60 community gardens across Canberra for 7 years. It provides funding for community groups to buy materials and tools, and to hire equipment or contractors to do some of the heavy lifting for new and existing community gardens.

Community gardens have many benefits for our community – they provide opportunities for people to grow and consume local food, provide a place for people to meet with others and connect with nature, offer opportunities for movement and recreation, help people to develop skills and knowledge, and much more.

Community gardens are fantastic places to showcase sustainability practices such as:

  • repurposing, recycling and reusing resources, tools and materials
  • minimising the use of harmful chemicals and substances by prioritising the use of organic and eco-friendly options
  • adopting zero emissions technology such as electric alternatives to fossil fuel-powered tools
  • reducing local emissions through composting and planting trees and shrubs.

This year there is $40,000 of grant funding available, and not-for-profit community organisations, groups and body corporates can apply for up to $10,000 per project.

Projects that are selected for funding will foster healthier communities, demonstrate best practice sustainability, and have strong community support.

Applications close on July 8, 2022.
