More solar in the city with the Sustainable Household Scheme

23 May 2022

Canberra households are a powerhouse when it comes to renewable energy – literally. The amount of rooftop solar installed through the Sustainable Household Scheme is equivalent to the power generated by Royalla Solar Farm!

The Sustainable Household Scheme offers eligible Canberrans zero-interest loans of up to $15,000 to improve their homes’ energy efficiency.

More than 5,000 Canberra households have taken up the offer since the Sustainable Household Scheme was launched in September 2021, applying for over $55 million in loans.

Along with solar panels, battery and solar packages are leading the charge as the most popular products available through the Scheme.

There is growing interest among Canberrans wishing to use the loan to purchase an electric vehicle. People who purchase an electric vehicle also receive a stamp duty exemption and two years of free vehicle registration.

Many households are taking the opportunity that the interest free loans present to upgrade their appliances as they reach the end of their life cycle. Over 1,500 applications have been received for electric heating and cooling systems, hot water heat pumps and electric stove tops.

The Sustainable Household Scheme is not only helping households reduce their energy bills and contributing to our emission-reduction targets; it’s also supporting Canberra businesses and creating local jobs.
