New large-scale battery storage facility in Williamsdale will future proof Canberra’s energy supply

13 Apr 2023

The proposed new facility is part of the ACT Government's Big Canberra Battery project.

The Big Canberra Battery project will see a network of batteries across Canberra supplying sustainable energy to the grid.

The 250-megawatt (MW), 500 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery will be built in Williamsdale. It will store energy for use across the Territory.

It is expected to store enough renewable energy to power one-third of Canberra for two hours during peak demand periods. It will also provide critical support during summer months when the electricity grid is under strain.

The facility will be built and operated by Eku Energy. Construction will begin in late 2024 and is expected to finish in 2025.

Battery storage technology is a critical component of the ACT Government's net zero emissions future.
