The ACT’s single use plastics ban is expanding

27 May 2022

Whether single-use plastics end up as litter or in landfill, they take hundreds or even thousands of years to break down.

That’s why the ACT Government has introduced laws that restrict what types of single use plastics are allowed in the Territory.

The laws are being brought in progressively to give everyone time to find products made from other, more environmentally sustainable materials. Switching to alternatives is one way we can ensure better environmental outcomes for the ACT.

From 1 July 2022, items banned from supply in the ACT will include:

  • single-use plastic straws (except for people who need them)
  • cotton buds with plastic sticks
  • oxo-degradable plastics

They join other items already banned in the ACT which include:

  • single-use plastic cutlery
  • single-use plastic drink stirrers
  • expanded polystyrene food and beverage containers
  • lightweight plastic shopping bags (less than 35 microns in thickness).

Keep up to date with the single-use plastics ban and explore a range of resources to help with the transition to less plastic.
